Sometimes a few minor cosmetic improvements are all that it takes to makeover your smile—and your overall appearance in the process. teeth whiteningStudies have shown that people with whiter teeth tend to be viewed more favorably by their peers, in everything from professional competence to confidence and self-esteem. This may be a self-fulfilling prophecy, as people admit that stained and discolored teeth are a major source of embarrassment and dissatisfaction for them. However, professional teeth whitening treatments can transform teeth from mediocre to brilliant in as little as a single office visit. Dr. Mary Gregory offers these cosmetic and general dentistry services from her Arlington, VA, office; read on to find out how these treatments can benefit you!

Rejuvenate Your Smile with Professional Teeth Whitening

Over the counter whitening products can help, but they are not as powerful as professional treatments and may contain abrasive ingredients that can harm the tooth's enamel layer. In contrast, when performed by a skilled dentist (such as those at our Arlington practice), tooth whitening is safe and can deliver significant and immediate results.

Who Should Get Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments?

Even people who practice good oral hygiene and use at home whitening treatments are susceptible to stains and discolorations due to normal everyday factors like diet and the natural aging process itself, which causes the enamel layer to thin over time.

The biggest tooth staining culprits include:

  • Coffee and tea
  • Red wine
  • Smoking
  • Sauces, berries, and acidic foods
  • Certain medications
  • Trauma
  • Genetics

In some cases, teeth just generally look dull and faded, and whitening treatment can provide an immediate boost that can brighten the entire face (some people credit teeth whitening with taking several years off of their overall appearance). Whether you are looking to make a great first impression at your next job interview or you simply want to invest in a smile makeover for personal satisfaction, teeth whitening is a good first step to a better personal appearance and a higher level of self-confidence.

Bonding is a viable cosmetic dentistry procedure provided by Dr. Mary Gregory, your Arlington, VA dentist. This procedure is used in orderBonding to repair the tooth’s surface and/or structure. Bonding uses an enamel-like material that is applied directly to the tooth’s surface and sculpted to an ideal shape. From there, it is hardened and polished. The procedure itself typically takes just one visit.

More about Bonding

Bonding is usually performed to fill in gaps, change the color of teeth or to repair chips or cracks in the teeth. The results can last for years. Bonded teeth are cared for just like natural teeth with regular brushing and flossing. Our Arlington dentist, Dr. Gregory, can teach patients a viable oral hygiene routine that works.

Before the bonding procedure starts, the surface of the teeth is cleaned and etched with a gel that opens the pores that allows the bonding material to work better. This gel is then rinsed off before any of the composite resin material is painted on the surface of the teeth. A curing light is used to harden the material and then the teeth are polished to finish the procedure.

Bonding can be more susceptible to staining or chipping than veneers. Bonded composite resin is the most durable bonding option out there. Bonding can even be used as a tooth-colored filling for small cavities or severely chipped or broken teeth throughout the mouth. Bonding can be used to change the color or shape of the teeth or to close spaces between the teeth. For instances that bonding may not be as successful, your dentist may recommend a dental crown.
